Window Alternatives by Kathy Hamilton
From a young age Kathleen Hamilton knew that she wanted to work with colors and materials. At age 8, under her grandmother’s tutelage, she learned to sew. She experimented with designs becoming proficient enough to eventually sew everything from suits to gowns.

This passion brought Kathy to the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York to formalize her studies. She graduated from F.I.T. with a degree in Fashion Design and the foundation to launch a career in the garment industry.

Kathy gained experience in the fashion industry creating men’s and women’s clothing designs and seeing them through the manufacturing process. She travelled throughout Europe to all the major fashion centers including Paris, Milan, London and Amsterdam to identify trends and create the designs that American consumers would love. She then worked in many Far East manufacturing locations including Hong Kong, Taiwan and India to complete the designs and insure quality assembly of the products. These garments were sold in major retailers and boutiques throughout the U.S. and Canada.

When Kathy moved into her new house she used her lifelong skills and experiences to create the home of her dreams. She designed all of the window treatments and sewed, assembled and installed them. Her neighbor was so impressed that she talked Kathy into doing the same for her home. Word spread, and Kathy found herself living her true passion, and an extension of what she had been doing all along.

Kathy decided to form her own window treatment business. She would specialize in the design, manufacture and installation of custom window treatments. It allowed her to build on her garment industry experiences in working with colors, fabrics and other materials. It also allowed her to utilize her manufacturing knowledge to ensure that her designs were sound and made beautiful products.

Window Alternatives was born over 20 years ago from the passion of design. Kathy continues to live it today by helping homeowners design beautiful window treatments. Her contributions have twice been cited in the prestigious New Jersey Homebuilder “Model of the year” competition, one winning 1st place. She is also a Window Fashions Certified Professional, an important industry recognition.
